Hybridisation solved several practical problems that pure landrace lines presented to growers outside the tropics. Breeders developed sativa dominant seeds by crossing tall, slow equatorial varieties with compact indica plants, keeping much of the aroma and growth character while trimming weeks from the flowering period. The resulting plants typically produce denser flowers than their pure ancestors. This compromise made equatorial genetics accessible to a much wider range of climates and grow spaces.
